Step-by-Step Guide · Start Here

Enroll in Oklahoma Parent-Taught Driver Education (PTDE)

Before workshops, permits, or behind-the-wheel hours, every family must complete the official PTDE process through Service Oklahoma. Follow these five steps in order — each one is required.

1

Check Eligibility

Make sure both the teen and parent instructor meet Oklahoma's state requirements before applying.

  • Student: Must be at least 15 years old
  • Parent: Valid OK Driver's License
  • No more than 5 points on driving record
  • No DUI/DWI in past 12 months
2

Submit the Affidavit

The parent must apply to become an authorized instructor through the Navigate OK portal before the teen begins coursework.

  • Fill out the online PTDE application
  • Service Oklahoma reviews and emails an approval number (DPS Control Number)
3

Purchase Approved Course

With your DPS Control Number, choose a state-approved online provider to complete the required 30-hour classroom curriculum.

4

Obtain Learner Permit

Once enrolled in the course and with your parent approval number, visit a Service Oklahoma Driver License Exam site to apply for a Learner Permit.

5

Complete Behind-the-Wheel

After getting the permit, the parent and teen must complete the required driving practice and additional safety courses before licensing.

  • 55 hours of behind-the-wheel practice
  • 10 hours must be at night
